I need help straightening out this mess.?

6 years ago i was friends with an amazing girl, we hooked up once, but it turned out she was not interested in me that way. which, despite the heartache, i was able to deal with. we both went away to different colleges, lead lives, had relationships, and now find ourselves back in town spending a lot of time together. i get the vibe now that she might be into me after the past weeks, we're both single and have told each other that we love each other, and i do love her, but maybe just not in that way... i need a way to have us lay our cards on the table so we can break the unspoken awkwardness and not have this ambiguous non dating relationship mess. that being said, i want to avoid a big nonsense emotional scene where we can no longer be friends. help please.
