If I'm using pieced fabric to make a zip pouch, do I need to quilt it or can it just be used as fabric?

I hand sewed hexagons and will piece the rest of the exterior of the pouch. I will line the pouch too. Do I need to stabilize the pieced part (and if so, with what) or can I just use it as a single piece of fabric without quilting it?
