Has Society defined all of the possible pathways for life on earth?

You pick the path and it seems to me that society has the dozen or so sub paths that lead you toward your individual idea within theses options. This is not intended to be cynical rather, only an observation. What is it about man that is so comfortable with having others provide us our pathways? Who was the last one to say no to it all and create his or her own path?
