Does normal wisdom tooth eruption cause pain?

Hi, I'm 18 years old and in the past my dentist has told me that I wouldn't need to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed. Since there's supposed to be enough room in my jaw and since they're supposed to come in straight, will I have any pain when they are erupting? What if they never erupt?
